Explore the Kustavi Archipelago in southwest Finland with a guided sea kayak tour in the archipelago. Our sea kayak+lodge packages allow you to enjoy sea kayaking and combine it with the comfort of an overnight stay at our glamping lodge. Every day we set out to explore these stunning islands.
Sea kayaking in the Kustavi Archipelago gives you the opportunity to get to know the island world with its crystal clear waters and to experience the wildlife, beauty and tranquility of the Bothnian Sea National Park and various marine nature reserves.
When you return to Kalliokumpu Eco Lodge after your excursion, you will experience excellent food, comfortable beds, Finnish sauna and a private atmosphere. Our lodge is located in the interior of the island, in the middle of the island forest on a 4500m2 site with three charming glamping accommodations around our island house on the island of Vartsala in the Kustavi archipelago.
Our tours are suitable for all paddler levels. We especially recommend our excursions to new paddlers. We offer half-day, full-day and two-day (overnight camping) sea kayak trips. Most of our excursions take place in the sheltered waters around Vartsala Island, where we browse for example Ströömi Sound or the northern natural paradises to observe white-tailed eagles and other seabirds and, if we are lucky, seals. Our full-day sea kayak trips offer the opportunity to explore further afield, into the Bothnian Sea National Park or around the northern Åland Islands.

Ströömi Passage
Duration: 4 - 5 hours | ca. 15 km
The tour leads us from north to south along the Ströömi Sound, the beautiful strait that also adorns the coat of arms of the municipality of Kustavi. We start on the island of Kaurisalo and paddle through the beautiful diverse nature between the main islands of Kustavi and the island of Lypertö. We cross the historic part of the archipelago, shaped by seafaring and fishing, and want to get to know life in the archipelago. Volter Kilpi's novel "In the Hall of Alastalo", a classic of Finnish literature, is set right here. In the author's footsteps we encounter old fishermen's huts, captain's villas and wooden houses, as well as modern aquaculture and the call of white-tailed eagles and eider ducks. We go ashore at Kivimaa and end the tour where Kilpi's novel begins.

Jurmo Drive - North Åland Encounter
Duration: 2 days | ca. 20 km
Two-day pleasure tour in the remoteness of the northern Åland Islands. By boat we reach the island of Åva. From there we start the circumnavigation of the island of Jurmo. We cross the island of Norrö, which is exposed to the sea and has a nature reserve of the same name. With a bit of luck we will encounter individual seals on our way through the lonely Achipelago. We will camp in the pretty little island settlement to also explore Jurmo's nature trail through the mysterious island forest.

We usually start our tours from the island of Vartsala, which is also home to the Kalliokumpu Eco Lodge. The North Åland tour, around the island of Jurmo, begins with a 45-minute ferry crossing on the MS Viggen to the neighboring archipelago. We reach the starting point for the Ströömi Transit after a 50-minute drive.
SAFETY
In addition to experiencing nature, the safety of our guests is very important to us. Depending on the weather and the experience of the participants, we also spontaneously change tour plans (tour length, route, etc.). At the beginning of a tour you will receive a safety briefing from us. ​
We are committed to responsible animal observation and comply with given regulations and guidelines.
We use sturdy plastic sea kayaks (1 or 2 people), chosen for their comfort and stability. No previous knowledge is necessary. We travel in small groups with a maximum of 4 participants plus 1 guide. Sea kayaking in the Kustavi Archipelago is a fantastic activity for the whole family.
To participate in a sea kayaking tour, you must be able to swim. Minimum age for sea kayak tours is 12 years.
